7 essential things to do the day before an exam

Since you decided to resume your studies, you only have one objective. Your main goal is to pass your course and earn ministerial credits. You’ve been working tirelessly for weeks, maybe even months, to achieve it. But there’s still one hurdle to overcome: the dreaded exam.

For many, this can cause insecurity and stress. You may have experienced difficult times related to exams in the past and have bad memories of them. But remember that things have changed a lot since then. You’ve gained maturity and confidence. And after all, an exam is like anything else; it requires preparation. Since you studied properly and followed your teachers’ advice… the teachers and you do additional exercises, if necessary, there is no reason to panic.  

The exam is a mandatory step that only serves to ensure you’ve retained the essential concepts of your course. Of course, you’re the only one who can take the exam (and pass it), but to help you, we’ve compiled a few points that we think are important to complete the day before an exam. 

Exam night=Carefully review your notes.

Obviously, the day before an exam isn’t the right time to cram everything you’ve learned. Besides, you already know all the material, and you’ve been well prepared by your teachers. Before an exam, it’s recommended not to overload yourself and to only review the essential points of your course. Now’s the time to pull out your lecture notes and your best work. Mind maps and flashcards.

Exam night=Prepare your things carefully

The exam is stressful enough as it is; no need to add to it by neglecting organization and logistics. We advise you to prepare the day before to minimize unnecessary stress on the day itself. To do this, make sure you have everything you need: pens, a calculator, a book, notes, and of course, your ID. If you’re unsure what you’re allowed to bring to the exam, ask your teacher for confirmation.

Exam day-Check the directions to your exam location

The last thing you want is to be late for your big day. To avoid this, check your planned route in advance. If you’re driving, make sure there are no major roadworks, for example. We also suggest you check the parking options near your venue.

If you’re using public transport, remember to allow plenty of time for any unexpected delays. Hearing an announcement about a service disruption just minutes before an important exam: there’s nothing more stressful!

Exam night=Boost your diet.

Food plays a hugely important role in your health and your body (and therefore your brain). Some of them are even known to improve memory or concentration. We’re not saying that changing your diet overnight will magically make you pass your exam. However, food is your body’s true fuel, and it’s wise to choose it carefully. Now’s the time to stock up on essential vitamins and minerals. And let’s be honest, the night before an exam isn’t the ideal time to eat a big, heavy, fatty dinner that might upset your digestion all night. 

The morning of theexamIt’s advisable to eat a breakfast that’s fairly rich in carbohydrates, such as whole-grain cereals or oatmeal. This will allow you to last all morning without getting hungry in the middle of the event. Even though it might be tempting, try not to drink too much coffee or any other energy drink, which could increase your energy levels and anxiety

The night before the exam = Forget about the sleepless night

Everyone is unique, and there are no ideal recommended sleep hours. That said, an adult generally needs 8 hours of sleep per nnightyes, it can be tempting to cram all night the night before an exam. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t do any good. At that point, it’s all over! It’s not the time to go to bed at 2 a.m. The most important thing is to show up for the exam well-rested. Especially since lack of sleep can lead to stress, irritability, but also a lack of attention and memory lapses that can have serious consequences for academic performance.

Moreover, a study reveals that 36.3% of Canadians over 18 years of age with insufficient sleep report experiencing chronic stress, compared to 23.3% among those with adequate sleep. 

The night before an exam, take time to breathe

There are many natural activities that can help you reduce exam-related stress. One of the simplest, yet often overlooked, is breathing! The benefits of physical activity are generally also well known to help reduce stress. The important thing is that you move and release tension.

Several studies also demonstrate the benefits of spending time outdoors. So, don’t hesitate to take a break to go for a walk alone or with your family, take your dog to the park, or go play outside with the children. 

Exam Eve=Learn to put things into perspective

Remember that it’s perfectly normal to feel stressed; perhaps you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed the night before an exam. Even if your studies are very important to you (and we congratulate you on that), remember that it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get the grade you want. After all, your entire future doesn’t depend on just one exam! There are times in life when you might not perform as well.
